Tuesday 31st March 2020

Hi everyone,

It's the last day in March tomorrow (those April showers yesterday came a little early didn't they?).

I hope you all received Miss Yates' email yesterday and felt reassured by the message. As you will have read, there will be daily activities on the blog for today and tomorrow to take us into the Easter holidays. After the Easter holidays there will be a weekly grid of activities which will give you the flexibility to choose which activities you do and when during the week (so you can perhaps get those 'indoor' jobs done when the weather isn't as good). I will continue to blog daily to keep in touch with you all and perhaps make suggestions towards activities if you prefer some direction.

As for today -

Maths - as a starter, use your number cards to make any 2 digit number. Write that number in the middle of your page and then around it write as many calculations as you can that equal that number. Here's a video to remind you how to do this.

Then try this (you will need your number cards again).

Literacy - there is a choice of activities today.

The first is a 'Fix the sentences' task. I have included a link straight to the document. You can choose a few of the sentences to 'fix' or do all of them if you like! Here's an example of some of them. It would be useful to have your complex sounds chart from your pack for this one. You may have to change a lot about the sentence to help it make sense. Remember to read it aloud to help you.

OR - here are some reading comprehension tasks. They have different stars on the bottom to show how challenging they are. 1 star = simplest task, 2 star = confident, 3 = challenging. If you would like some more support with these - ask an adult to read one of the texts to you and you can try to answer the questions.

Science - I hope you've seen some of the gorgeous Spring lambs that are jumping around in the fields around our lovely village? Here is a Science activity that will use your questioning skills. The task is to find the 'Odd one out'. We've looked at these before and so you may remember that there is no right answer. You need to give reasons why each of the pictures could be the odd one out - for example 'The duckling is the odd one out because it is the only one that hatches from an egg.'

Remember to keep active too - use your Jump Start Johnny login in your home learning pack or catch up with PE with Joe on The Body Coach TV You Tube page. Get some fresh air too - although you may need to wrap up warm as it seems a bit chillier at the moment!

See you tomorrow!

Monday 30th March 2020

Morning everyone!

Maths starter - get those numeral cards out and turn them all face down. Turn one over and, as quickly as you can, say the number needed to add to it to make 10. For example, if you turn over the number 6 - you need to shout out '4!' because 6 + 4 = 10. Turn that card back over and choose another one. Keep going until you get really quick!

Maths - these activities build upon activities that we have completed in school on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. There are 3 different tasks to choose from (or you can try all 3 if you like!). In Maths we often choose which activity we want to do depending upon how confident we feel. For this task, the difference between the tasks is shown on the bottom left of the page where you will see either a red, blue or orange star.

This may help you choose:
Red star = 1 star challenge - a simpler task if you are feeling unsure
Blue star = 2 star challenge - an activity to choose if you are feeling confident
Orange star = 3 star challenge - an activity if you are ready for more of a challenge.
I have also included a picture of the answers so you could check them yourselves - no peeking first though!

I've worked out how to attach a link to documents (see, we're all learning!). So all of the activities above can be viewed by clicking onto the link below. Hoping that may make it easier for some of you going forward.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qjF9mywUgzNuOQSLhYKtClDglJFfEFHc/view?usp=sharing

Literacy - Try to access one of the Read Write Inc You Tube sessions a day, maybe even two a day. Here's a reminder of which ones you should be looking for.

Set 1 - Red group
Set 2 - Green, Purple and Pink groups (could watch Set 1 also to review).
Set 3 - Orange, Yellow, Blue and Grey groups (could also watch Set 2 to review).

We've talked lots about the houses in London in 1666 being too close together but here's one that is quite the opposite!
Here is a possible story starter for the picture - "Standing on his porch, Ben drew breath. As the clean, cool air filled his lungs, a smile spread across his face …"

With this picture in mind, look at each of the simple sentences below. Can you add a subordinate clause to extend them? Remember, you’ll need to use a conjunction like ‘and’ or ‘so’ or ‘but’.

1) A small wave rippled across the tranquil water ...
(eg. A small wave rippled across the tranquil water and the gentle breeze cooled the skin on Ben's face.)

2) It had been raining all morning ...
(eg. It had been raining all morning but now the soft rays of the sun started to dry the puddles that had formed on the cool rock.)

3) Ben enjoyed living here ...

4) He had grown tired of living in the busy city ...

Write the sentences you create in full, using your best handwriting, in your exercise books.

Additional task

Using the picture above, think about how Ben manages to live in a place like this. Where does he get his food from? How does he travel around? How far away does the nearest person live?

Can you draw your perfect house? Think not only about what it looks like and what is inside, but where it is.

See you tomorrow!

Friday 27th March

Happy Friday Rowan Class!

Hope that you've been able to view my little 'Hello' message to you all on the video above 👍

Once again, I hope that you have found the blog posts useful - I haven't received any comments as of yet so I'm going to assume that everything else is OK - let me know if there is anything different I could be doing to help.

Here's some learning ideas for the day.

Maths - Something to get you started.

Have a look at this little game online to help you with the next task.

https://classroomsecrets.co.uk/year-2-place-value-charts-iwb-place-value-activity/

Hopefully that gave you a little reminder - now try this next activity (I have included an example too). You can draw out a quick place value chart like the one below and make some place value counters - circles of paper or card (some with 10 on to show 10s and some with a 1 on to show 1s).

 For example,

Literacy - Do you remember this guy?

One of the activities that I was really looking forward to doing with you was for you to create your own beast that could be a friend for the Lonely Beast (perhaps your beast came to the party at the end of the story). You could make your beast out of whatever material you like (playdough, junk modelling, or you may like to draw your beast instead). Then write a few sentences to describe what your beast is like. I'd love to hear about some of your creations.

Geography - You know the beast that you created earlier? Where does he come from? Explore a map or globe if you have one or ask an adult if you can look at one safely online. When you have chosen a place - use what you know about maps and globes to tell me more about where your beast lives. Is it near the equator? Near to the coastline? Think back to the work we did on St Lucia and the Isle of Coll in Scotland to help you.

I've also added a new Sumdog challenge which will be available from Friday 27th March 9am until Sunday 7pm to give you a bit more flexibility to complete.

Also wanted to draw your attention to the Max Whitlock You Tube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MIJ5dLdEw0 Miss Askew found this channel and asked me to share it with you as there are so many keen gymnasts in Rowan class. Could be worth a look - 6 minute long videos.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Mrs Good

Thursday 26th March

Hey Rowan Class!

Hope that you are all well and enjoying some bonus time with your families. It was great to see that lots of you took part in the Sumdog challenge - I can see when you have been using it and I'm so glad to see that it is being used - hope you are enjoying it! I will start a new challenge ready for Friday that can last over the weekend too.

Did you get out in the sun at all yesterday? Hope that you managed to do something physical like PE with Joe Wicks or Jump Start Johnny. Leave me a comment to let me know the kind of things you have been doing.

Here's some ideas for Thursday.

Maths - here is a starter activity. We do lots of these types of problems in our CLIP groups or on the carpet with a whiteboard. Have a go at this one.

Next, get out your number cards that are in your home learning pack and have a go at this. You can write down the calculations in your orange book.

Literacy - continue to practise those sounds using either the Read Write Inc You Tube videos (see yesterday's blog post) or use the sound packs that you have taken home with you.

In your pack you may also have found a card and envelope. In times like this when we are not able to see some members of our family as often as we would like we need to keep in touch with them in other ways. Perhaps you have been able to use a mobile phone or tablet to see and speak to them? We are lucky to have that sort of technology now but before we did, letters were an important way of keeping in touch.

I would like you to write a card to someone special. Tell them what you have been doing in these last few days and perhaps ask them some questions about how they are and what they have been doing. I'm sure you will be able to remember whether you need to use a full stop or a question mark at the end of your sentence. If you have asked a question, what should you use?

If you have used your card and envelope already, no problem. I'm sure you can find some paper at home to write another letter - or use a page out of your exercise book.

Topic work - How shall we rebuild London? Imagine the Great Fire of London has just happened. You have been given the job of rebuilding London. What will it look like? How will you make sure that same sort of disaster won't happen again? You could use Lego to do this or some other form of construction. I'd love to hear the ideas that you had.

As always, please feel free to leave any comments or the school office is still open if you need to get a message to me that way.

Stay safe everyone.

Wednesday 25th March

Hi all,

I hope this post finds you all well? I do hope that those of you that have accessed the blog posts have found them useful? I do welcome your comments as I want to continue to help in any way that I can. You can comment at the end of each post and whilst I don't get notifications when a comment has been made, I am checking regularly throughout the day.

The activities that I post daily are suggestions for activities. The home learning packs that were sent home included lots of activities and the homework grids can be used as often as is needed. I know that some children were keen to research topics that they were interested in and this is a great idea! I would love to hear about what you have been doing!
Here are some further suggestions for the day.

Maths - Practise your 2 and 10 x tables. You could say them out loud, write them out or ask someone at home to test you.

Here is another activity for you to try. This would be perfect for you to use with the Base 10 resources that were sent home in your pack to cut out and use.

Literacy - Do some reading at home. Perhaps you could read one of the books that are in your learning pack or is there another book at home that you are really enjoying? You could make a list of some of the new or exciting vocabulary that you find in there.

Remember that the Read Write Inc sessions are available on You Tube for 24 hours so they can easily fit into any routine. If you can't access them, give a mini Read Write Inc lesson to a 'class' of your toys or to someone younger at home. Eden loved teaching me the sounds 'a' after watching the You Tube session.

Get outdoors if you can - enjoy the sunshine! If you are unable to do this - try a Jump Start Johnny (the password is in your pack). Or put on some music and make up your own Jump Start Johnny routine.

Science activity - Last week we were thinking about which materials would make a waterproof roof for a house. Have a look at this picture and see if you can decide which house is the odd one out (there is no right answer) maybe you think that any of them could be for different reasons.
Can you make a den outside that would be suitable for one of your toys to shelter in? Or perhaps make one from Lego or something else?

I'd love to hear about what you've been up to and how you are finding learning at home. Please feel free to leave your comments here.

Have a good day.

Home Learning - Tuesday 24th March 2020

Hi everyone,

I really hope you had a chance to enjoy the sun yesterday. I can see that some of you accessed the Home Learning post for Monday 23rd. If you tried out some or all of the activities, I hope that they were straightforward to access and helpful.

It was a day of home learning for us as a family and we particularly enjoyed topping up the class activities from the school website and blogs with the Read, Write Inc and Joe Wicks PE sessions on You Tube.

I would strongly urge you to make use of your Sumdog log in if you haven't already. I have created a challenge activity for the whole class to access for Tuesday 24th March. This has been tailored for the needs of your child and it is available from 9am-7pm on Tuesday! I will be able to access how everyone got on following the challenge and will set more as the days go on.

Just a little reminder that the RWI sessions are really worthwhile and only take 10 minutes each. They can also be accessed 24 hours after airing if you miss it the first time.
Set 1 - Red group
Set 2 - Green, Purple and Pink groups (could watch Set 1 also to review).
Set 3 - Orange, Yellow, Blue and Grey groups (could also watch Set 2 to review).

Maths - As a counting starter - get your 100 square out of your pack and choose any 2 digit number (41 for example). Practise counting 10 more or 10 less from your chosen number (41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 and then count 10 less - 91, 81 and so on). Do this with a few different numbers. You can use your 100 square to support you if you need to. If you want to extend yourself, go beyond 100 and even below 0 if you can!

Then you could try partitioning some 2 digit numbers using the part part whole method which we have often used in the classroom. Here is a reminder of how to use it.

Remember that you can make the number first using your Base 10 resources that you have in your pack. Once you have made the number (45) you can make it using 4 tens and 5 ones - once you have done that you can move the Base 10 into two separate 'parts't. That should've refreshed your memory so now try these.

Remember to record your answers using the part part whole method by drawing a part part whole in your book (3 circles with the top circle joined to the bottom two).

For an extra challenge, you may want to try this.

For a Literacy task, either read (or ask someone to read to you) this short story (sorry that the quality of the picture isn't brilliant). Then, have a look at the activity below where you have to re-write the sentences making sure you use capital letters in the right places.

That seems quite a lot for one day so all I will say is make sure you get some fresh air or exercise at some point during your day (I hope that your Jump Start Johnny log in is getting some good use!).

Take care everyone and stay safe.

Home Learning - Monday 23rd March

Hi Rowan Class,

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend and that you are all happy and healthy - wasn't it great to see the sun out?

I hope you have all had a chance to have a little peek at your home learning packs - the activities are there for you to use whenever you like, remember to record anything you do in your orange books (feel free to decorate these!). Also, if you click on the Parents tab and then Learning at home on our school website, there are some fabulous ideas. My children at home are going to be doing a PE lesson with Joe Wicks and then a Read, Write Inc lesson online!

So here are your activities for Monday.

I would highly recommend that the Read, Write Inc sessions online become part of your regular routine. The link is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

Children who are currently reading Red, Green or Purple books would benefit from the Set 1 Speed Sounds Session.

Those reading Pink or Orange books would benefit from the Set 2 Speed Sounds Session (they could also watch the session for Set 1 as a recap).

And those reading Yellow, Blue or Grey books would benefit from the Set 3 Speed Sounds Session (they could also watch the session for Set 2 as a recap).

For another Literacy task you could try out using commas when writing a list.
Here's a little video to explain when we use commas in a list.

Now try these activities below - or you could try writing your own list (maybe a shopping list or a list to describe the animals you might find in a zoo).

For Maths - try this activity using your number cards from your learning pack (you might need to make some symbol cards too like +, - and =).

Then, try making yourself a number line from 0 to 50! Get creative but make sure your numbers are formed correctly and are in the right order. You can keep it for future maths activities and use it to practise counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10.

For a topic activity - Remember how Samuel Pepys buried all his favourite things to protect them from the fire in London in 1666? Well, write a list of the things that are precious to you. What would you bury to keep it safe? You can either write a list using bullet points or practise writing your list using commas. Remember that the last two things on your list have 'and' between them, not a comma.Perhaps you would prefer to draw your precious things instead and have a go at labelling them?

These are just suggestions for the day. Sorry if it seems too much or too little. We are all finding our way through this strange situation.

Have fun in the sun too! See you again soon!

Mrs Good
